Welcome to the Family Law Centre's
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Pages

To review the topics of questions and answers in the FAQ section, please scroll through the Table of Contents listed in the left frame. When you find a subject matter of interest to you, click on it and the topic will come up in this frame. Each topic has its own Table of Contents to make it easy to see if the question you have is dealt with.

If you have a question in any topic which isn't covered, please submit it to the FLC by clicking on the Submit icon at the bottom of each section.

Note:

In discussing various questions throughout the various topics the answers given will reflect the situation and the law in Ontario and will rely on the provisions of Ontario's Family Law Act. Each of the provinces and territories in Canada have their own legislation dealing with these same issues and not all jurisdictions deal in the same way for all matters. Of course, wherever the Divorce Act applies it covers the entire country. But even with the Divorce Act there are cases where the different provincial courts approach matters differently.

While the law where you live may be similar to that of Ontario, please make sure to check with a local lawyer familiar with family law to see if the answers set out apply as strongly to you as they do to someone in Ontario.

Tips On Using Frames

When you are in a frame and use a link to jump to some other place, you can return to the original frame by clicking on your right mouse button and then clicking on "Back".

You can make the right frame wider by moving your cursor over the line dividing the two frames. It will change from the usual arrow to a line pointing to both the right and the left. Hold the button down and move the cursor to the left as far as you want - then release the mouse button. That will move the barrier between the two frames to where you released the mouse button.

You can make your screen taller so as to show more content by going to Options above the task bar and click off the Show Location and Show Directory Buttons options.

To print a frame you must have it "live". To do this, just click anywhere in that frame before you start printing.
