Adoption: Helping You Build a Family

Back to Contents

This site is put up by the people at Adoption Helper, a Canadian national quarterly magazine dealing with adoption issues and is one of the most, if not the most, comprehensive listing of adoption resources anywhere on the Internet.

The site has two past copies of their Adoption Helper magazine online with information about how to get more. As well it has a Directory of 31 adoption newsletters in Canada, 121 adoption newsletters in the U.S. and links to 56 adoption Web sites as well as connections to adoption newsgroups, mailing lists and other resources. There are also 16 Bulletins on specific adoption issues.

There is information provided about such support groups as the Adoption Council of Canada and the Adoption Council of Ontario as well as a directory of over 200 adoption support groups across Canada with detailed descriptions about several of those listed. There is also a lengthy list of Private Adoption Agencies in Canada plus some selected American agencies. There is even a comprehensive site dealing with infertility issues as well as one on Post Adoption Issues.

American Sites

There are many useful sites dealing with adoption issues put up by various American groups. The nature of the topic is such that, apart from specific legislation, much of the information, particularly about foreign adoption possibilities, is of value to people interested in adoption anywhere in North America. The sites listed below are not intended to be a comprehensive list, but will act as a sample of what information there is and as a gateway into a much wider world of information.

Faces of Adoption: America's Waiting Children

Back to Contents

This is a non-profit organization based in Philadelphia whose mission is to "expand adoption opportunities throughout the United States for children with special needs and those from minority cultures." It has pictures and descriptions of children awaiting adoption - all of whom have some form of disability. These aren't the popular, healthy children most commonly sought for adoption. If you are approved to adopt in the U.S. you can register here and an adoption coordinator will help you search for children who match your interest. Most of the listed children are between 7 - 16 years old and have physical, emotional or learning disabilities. Many have brothers or sisters who need homes together. The site contains information about how to arrange for a home study and become approved to adopt.

The Adoptionquest pages included in this site have a huge listing of resources and articles about how to adopt, agencies, book reviews and information under such topics as: Single Parent Adopting, Gay and Lesbian Parenting, Adopting Over Age 40, Parenting Children With Special Needs (Emotional/Behavioural Difficulties, Mental Retardation, Learning Disabilities, Drug or Alcohol Exposure and HIV Exposure), Race and Culture, Post Adoption, Financial Assistance and Other Adoption Resources on the Internet.

The AdoptioNetwork

Back to Contents

A "volunteer-operated information resource for the adoption community". This site also has a huge range of material on adoption matters for birth parents (of all ages), adoptees and parents. The articles are in depth, varied and full of information for all stages of the adoption process from considerations for a pregnant mother thinking about adoption to post adoption issues to dealing with finding birth parents. As well, you can follow links to government, legal and social sources.

The Other Sites location (listed at the bottom of the left frame at their site) is a gold mine of links to adoption related resources on the Internet.

One of the most noteable things about the Internet is how often sites you really like disappear. Everyone of the sites referred to above was operational and accessable at the time it was reviewed - but there is no guarantee it's still there. If you tried to click onto a site and had difficulty, please send us an e-mail so we can look into it. Thanks, Joel Miller
