FAMILY ABUSE AND VIOLENCE |

American Sites
This is a topic too many of us choose to ignore, often despite the signs around us. Unforunately there are not many Canadian sites and two of those earlier reviewed here have disappeared oveer the past year. Hopefully more will soon appear to take their place. However there are many American sites which are of equal value to Canadians. The list below of American sites is only intended to be representative and to provide a gateway to others.
Canadian Sites
B.C. Institute of Family Violence
This site provides much useful infomation including contacts and telephone numbers for people in British Columbia. While not all of the organizations listed are in that province, many of them are. Click on Related Internet Resources for a large number of other sites offering advice, information and help for families dealing with abuse.
The FSACC is a feminist collective in Fredericton, New Brunswick, focussing on the eradication of sexual violence against women and children. Their site sets out the programmes they offer and a group of interesting and useful articles on Issues Concerning Sexual Assault including such topics as Myths and Realities, Aquaintance and Date Rape, Recognizing Danger Signs and How to Report a Sexual Assault to the Police. They have a variety of links to other feminist and assault resources on the Internet.

The Family Law Centre is sure that there are other Canadian Family Abuse and Violence sites on the Internet and would appreciate you e-mailing us particulars of their Internet addresses with a brief description so we can post them here.

Please submit any information about sites to add as well as the addresses of Abuse and Violence centres in your area. If enough are submitted we'll add a separate Directory for them.
The American Bar Association has a Commission on Domestic Violence and a web site filled with much valuable information. Apart from links to other sites it has information about how to recognize and deal with various forms of domestic violence with much informative and useful advice for both lawyers dealing with this problem and people who are experiencing this terrible situation. A good starting point.
The Metro Nashville Police department has created a site advising people how to deal with domestic abuse. It shows what signs to watch for and offers solid, realistic help. It provides much useful information for spouses and children in this situation as well as for those of us who know others caught in this plight.
A great selection of essays, articles and links to other abuse resources on the Internet. Includes a list of Hotlines and Other Contact Information for Battered Women, with telephone numbers across the United States.
This site focusses on the least well publicized of the abuse issues - husband battering. It has articles , cites and commentaries, statistics, cases and personal testimony as well as links to Men's Issues sites.
For a different perspective check out this site. It explores the "male-as-victim" aspect and the "other side" of the abuse issue. It contains links to sites with statistics dealing with numerous aspects of abuse and has an article by Peter Worthington from the January 31st, 1995 issue of the Ottawa Sun titled "Fictional Figures" dealing with the exageration of statistical information about women and violence. Many of the sites referred to here are not part of listings found elswhere.
This terrific site has an extensive Clearing House of Information on Violence and Abuse containing copies of their own Newsletter, a listing of Positions Available in this field, News Groups & Discussion Lists, Resource People Online, Books Online and more. It also contains excellent lists of other resources on the Internet which don't seem to be collected and listed elswhere. There is a page of university course syllabi as well as a page devoted to links to scholarly writing and research in the field. It even has a section called Arts & Prose. Taken together this site has meaningful content and acts as a valuable path to additional useful information. It is surprising that more universities don't put up this sort of site, but it's great to see one when it exits.
This site is huge and packed with what seems to be the most complete list of links to sexual assault and abuse sites on the Internet. The site provides extensive connections to sites dealing with such matters as: aquaintance rape, child sexual abuse, incest, rape, ritual abuse, false memory syndrome, male victims, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and poetry. It also includes a newsletter and an extensive list of Sexual Assault Crisis Centers.
Please submit any information regarding other Abuse and Violence sites which you think should be added to this Directory. Thanks. Joel Miller
One of the most noteable things about the Internet is how often sites you really like disappear. Everyone of the sites referred to above was operational and accessable at the time it was reviewed - but there is no guarantee it's still there. If you tried to click onto a site and had difficulty, please send us an e-mail so we can look into it. Thanks, Joel Miller
