The law which affects us comes from 3 sources. There’s the legislation written by the government in each jurisdiction (provincial or federal), there’s what we call the “common law” which is what everyone knows is the law because it’s found in the law reports even if it’s not actually mentioned in any legislation, and there’s the way the judges interpret that law, whether found in the legislation or the common law. Legislation is the place where you’ll be able to go to see the legislation dealing with family law matters, whether from your provincial or the federal government.
