The
Law Office Nuts & Bolts Sites
The
Access To Justice Network
This site is just terrific and has all sorts of information on almost
any aspect of Canadian law you can imagine. It's a project of the Legal
Studies Program at the University of Alberta and is a gift to the
rest of the country. If you're looking for a site with more Canadian law
than any other, this is it! It's well worth your while visiting and spending
an hour browsing just for your own information. It has a huge amount of
legal information and includes a considerable amount of family law material.
The problem is that it's not neatly collected in any one place or under
any one general heading.
To access family law subjects you need to click onto the Jump Menu drop-down
box and scroll through the many subjects listed there. Find the particular
one you're interested in amongst such topics as Adoption, Babysitting,
Child abuse, Child support, Collaborative Family Law, Commonlaw relationships,Custody,
Divorce, Family Court, Family law, Family violence, Marriage, Mediation,
Spousal support, etc., etc. In many cases you'll find a connection to
some other site and in other cases you're taken to a specific document
on the topic prepared by some respectable source. If you want to get a
good jump into almost any area of Canadian law, this is the place to start.
Canadian
Legal Information Institute (CanLII)
Looking for a Canadian case or some statute or regulation? If it's anywhere,
it's here. This site has the most comprehensive collection of Canadian
cases and legislation on the Internet. In some cases the access is to
the original court site and in other cases it's to CanLII's own version.
The CanLII version is usually better than the original in many cases because
of its Search feature. There's no direct Family Law connection but this
site is an easy way to get hold of the relevant family law legislation
in your province and those family law cases from the provincial courts
which are available on the Internet.
The site was designed by LexUM
at the Centre de recherche en droit public of the University of Montreal
for the Federation
of Law Societies of Canada for the free distribution of Canadian primary
legal material and does a wonderful service for us all. It's relatively
new and still seems to be growing.
Law
Society of Upper Canada's Great Library: Research - Legislation
This is a neat, one-stop, Internet access to all sorts of Canadian
legislation and court decisions, including such things as Hansard and
current status of legislation from most of the provincial and federal
governments.
Jurist
Canada
Wow! Talk about your sites with just about everything in them, check
this out. If you're looking for almost any sort of information about the
legal profession in Canada (including legal education) this is the site.
It has a wonderful sidebar with topical Canadian legal news. It also has
what must be the world's best selection of Canadian Law Journals available
through the internet and a collection of learned articles published and
in progress. This includes access to the personal archives of Professsor
Nick Bala's family law articles from 1995 - 2002.
Canada
Law Book
There aren't many references to commercial sites in this listing,
but Canada Law Book's site gets a mention because it has a summary of
the day's legal news on its home page and this is a neat way to keep current
on the many developments in law throughout the country. Includes reference
to U.S. and U.K. legal developments as well.
Stats
Canada - The Daily
This is the place to get your statistics, including the Latest
Consumer Price Index, the Release
Date Schedule for the CPI for the current year so you can get the
figures for the last few months or find out when the next month's figures
will be released. Clicking on the date of those already released takes
you to the info. (For the CPI for previous years I check out the day of
the month the figures were or will be issued for that month this year
and then go to Previous
Issues, enter the month and year and up the Issues for around that
date. There may be an easier way, but this works well.) To get a welter
of statistical information about the state of the Canadian family, check
out the "Families,
households and housing" section under Canadian Statistics. Get
your statistics here for divorces, marriages, family groupings, etc.,
etc., for your province and the country.
Auto
Trader.ca
Check this out to get the price for almost any car, SUV, truck, ATV, boat,
etc., by model and year. Very helpful for finding current valuations of
anything that moves if it's for sale anywhere in Canada.
